Organising a destination wedding in Taormina means working with a landscape that takes your breath away – the sea, the sky, Mount Etna rising in the distance – but also with a town that quickly reveals its complexities to anyone who arrives unprepared.
Last November, I returned to Sicily for a few days and stayed in an apartment overlooking Taormina Cathedral. It felt like a privilege. At that time of year, Taormina seems to belong to itself again: fewer visitors, a slower pace, and the opportunity to experience the town beyond its postcard-perfect image.
However, I wasn’t there as a tourist. I was observing it through the eyes of a destination wedding planner, trying to understand how the destination truly functions when an event is taking place.

Yet the place that surprised me most was Parco Trevelyan, also known as the Villa Comunale.
This remarkable garden overlooks the Mediterranean landscape, with sweeping sea views and Mount Etna in the background. It feels almost suspended outside time. International couples often discover it unexpectedly and are immediately captivated by its atmosphere.
Experiences like these reinforce something I have learned repeatedly while planning weddings across Italy: the most successful designs are often the least intrusive.
Rather than competing with the surroundings, I prefer allowing local textures and materials—lava stone, wrought iron, historic architecture and Mediterranean vegetation—to become part of the wedding aesthetic itself.

What can become a logistical challenge quickly turns into an extraordinary opportunity from an experiential perspective.
For a welcome party or rehearsal dinner, I often suggest embracing this variety. Couples may choose a seaside setting overlooking the water or move towards Castelmola for a completely different atmosphere.
Its stone-paved streets, panoramic views and historic village character create the perfect backdrop for a relaxed post-wedding brunch or an informal dinner featuring local Sicilian products and the area’s traditional almond wine.
By moving between the coast and the hilltop villages, couples can offer guests a dynamic experience that reveals several different sides of Sicily within a single wedding weekend.

The success of a destination wedding in Taormina can be measured by one thing above all else: the ability to make guests feel genuinely connected to the destination.
The scenery alone is not enough.
Attention must also be given to hospitality, logistics and the practical needs of guests who may be visiting Sicily for the first time.
This is especially true when hosting an international wedding.
Taormina rewards those who take the time to understand its character and respect its complexity. In return, it offers an extraordinary setting for celebrations that are not only beautiful to look at, but genuinely enjoyable to experience.
In my opinion, that is what transforms a wedding from a beautiful event into a lasting memory.
